Oberg Finishes TORC Season Strong
Exits Early in Huseman Cup
Eagle River, WI (October 5, 2012) - Mike
Oberg arrived at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds expecting strong
results for the General Tire AMSOIL Chevy, as the team looked to
secure the sixth position in the season championship. The Oberg
Motorsports team accomplished their first goal, but a first corner
incident in the Huseman Cup prevented the all the fans in
attendance and those watching online the opportunity to watch the
champion driver from Northern Wisconsin attempt to win his second
big money cup race.
The weekend began on Thursday with a golf
outing and benefit for the Huseman family that was well attended.
Then Friday saw the race trucks hit the track with practice
sessions and qualifying for Saturday's Round Thirteen line up.
Then everyone cleaned up their race trucks for a parade to
downtown Lancaster ending at BeX Bar for a pre-race soiree to get
everyone revved for the weekend's events.
Round Thirteen
The starting grid for the penultimate round
of the 2012 TORC season had the top six qualifiers inverted which
put the General Tire AMSOIL Chevy on the outside of the front row.
Oberg put the starting position to good use and raced inside the
top three positions all the way to lap seven of the twelve lap
event. At that point MacCachern made a clean pass on the #80
Chevrolet moving Oberg into the fourth spot. The remainder of the
race Oberg held the position to cross the finish one spot off the
podium.
With only a few hours to prepare for the
final regular
season
race of the year, the crew quickly brought the truck back to the
pit area. Along with cleaning and checking the chassis components,
the team made adjustments to the King Shocks and mounted a new set
of General Tires.
Round Fourteen
For the final race of the points
championship, TORC officials inverted the top four finishers from
round thirteen. Once again Oberg started from on the outside of
the front row. The start saw the all-black Chevy slip down to the
fourth position, but by lap five, Oberg was running in third
place. The remainder of the twelve lap race saw Oberg hold off one
challenge after another from Chad Hord to finish on the final step
of the podium.
"We really had a fight on our hands with
Chad," remarked Mike Oberg. " It was a grueling track out there,
it was getting a lot of holes in places but when you have 900
horsepower tearing up this place with our General Tires, you are
gonna have that happen. You really have to thank the TORC track
crew who has kept working to get this track into shape. "
Huseman Cup
The start of the final race of the weekend
saw Mike Oberg on the pole position of the lemans-style start. The
fifteen lap race for the Huseman Cup presented by Peak Performance
would have would see the front row of PRO-2WD trucks take the
green flag and then twenty five seconds later, the PRO-4x4 lineup
began chasing the two-wheel drive trucks.
When the green flag was waved, Oberg charged
into the first corner side by side with Chad Hord. Then as the
General Tire AMSOIL Chevy began to exit the first turn, another
truck made contact with Oberg's rear bumper, spinning the truck
and before he could get back on track, the entire Cup field went
on by. Needless to say Mike Oberg just headed back to his hauler
ending his season.
After fourteen rounds of racing in the 2012
Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL PRO-2WD Championship, Mike
Oberg finished in sixth place. During the season Oberg Motorsports
had five top five finishes, including a third place finish and a
win in Round 5.
